Valentine’s Day Swirl Cookies

Valentine’s Day swirl cookies made with soft sugar cookie dough and red and pink swirls. Perfect for holiday baking.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring
  • Pink food coloring

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide dough evenly into three portions.
  • Leave one portion plain. Tint one portion pink and one portion red.
  • Roll each dough portion into equal rectangles between parchment paper.
  • Stack dough layers evenly and press gently together.
  • Roll tightly from the long edge into a log.
  • Wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Slice dough log into rounds and place on baking sheet.
  • Bake for 9–11 minutes until edges are set and centers are soft.
  • Cool briefly on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

Chill dough thoroughly for best swirl definition. Gel food coloring gives the brightest color.
