Ingredients

large onion

garlic

beef broth

stout beer

Worcestershire sauce

tomato paste

tablespoons
all-purpose flour

teaspoon
salt

teaspoon
black pepper

sheet puff pastry or pie crust
1
large egg
for egg wash
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Brown beef in a pot over medium heat.
Add onion, carrots, and garlic and cook until softened.
Stir in flour and cook briefly.
Add broth, stout, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste.
Simmer for 45 to 60 minutes until beef is tender and sauce thickens.
Season with salt and pepper and let cool slightly.
Transfer filling to a baking dish.
Cover with pastry and seal edges.
Cut slits in top and brush with egg wash.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
Cool slightly and serve.
Notes
Use chuck beef for best tenderness.
Let filling cool before adding crust.
Replace stout with broth if desired.
