Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese freshly shredded
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°F. Pour melted butter into an 8x8-inch baking dish and spread evenly across the bottom. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese. Add buttermilk and mix until just combined; the dough will be thick and slightly sticky. Spread dough evenly over melted butter in the baking dish. Use a knife to score the dough into 9 squares before baking. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown on top. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough to keep biscuits tender. Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting. Score before baking for easier slicing. Store at room temperature for up to 2 days and reheat in the oven to restore crisp edges.
