Pasta usually sticks together for a few simple (and very fixable!) reasons. Here’s what’s likely happening and how to prevent it next time:

1. Not enough water in the pot
When pasta is crowded, it releases starch into a small space, and that starch turns everything sticky. A big pot with plenty of boiling water lets the pasta move freely.
2. The water wasn’t fully boiling
If the water is only simmering when the pasta goes in, it can sink, soften unevenly, and cling together. A rapid, rolling boil is your best friend.
3. You didn’t stir early enough
The first minute or two is when pasta is most likely to stick. A couple of gentle stirs right after adding it usually solves the problem.
4. Too much time sitting after draining
Pasta starts sticking the moment it cools and the starch settles. If you’re not tossing it with sauce right away, drizzle with a touch of olive oil and fluff it lightly with a fork.
5. Using fresh pasta
Fresh pasta is naturally softer and can stick more easily. It needs extra room and a bit more stirring.
