Homemade Twix

These Homemade Twix bars are buttery, caramel-filled, and coated in smooth chocolate everything you love about the classic candy bar, made right in your own kitchen. Don’t worry, this recipe is much easier than it looks, and I’ll guide you through each cozy layer so you feel confident every step of the way.

Ingredients

For the shortbread base:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • Pinch of salt

For the caramel layer:

  • 1 cup caramel squares, unwrapped
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

For the chocolate topping:

  • 1 1/2 cups milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil or butter (for shine, optional)

Steps

  1. Make the shortbread. Cream butter and powdered sugar until smooth. Mix in flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
  2. Bake the base. Press dough evenly into a parchment-lined 8×8 pan. Bake at 350°F for 18–20 minutes, until lightly golden. Let cool completely this helps the layers stay neat.
  3. Melt the caramel. In a saucepan over low heat, melt caramel squares with heavy cream, stirring gently until smooth and glossy.
  4. Add the caramel layer. Pour caramel over the cooled shortbread and spread evenly. Chill for 20–30 minutes until set.
  5. Melt the chocolate. Microwave chocolate chips with coconut oil in short bursts, stirring until smooth.
  6. Top with chocolate. Pour chocolate over the caramel layer and gently spread.
  7. Chill and slice. Refrigerate until firm, then lift out and slice into bars.

Chef’s Tips

  • Cool between layers: This keeps the caramel from sliding and gives you clean cuts.
  • Use parchment paper: It makes lifting and slicing effortless.
  • Warm your knife: A warm blade gives bakery-style edges when cutting.

Variations

  • Dark chocolate Twix: Use dark chocolate for a richer finish.
  • Salted caramel Twix: Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the caramel layer.
  • Peanut butter twist: Add a thin layer of peanut butter on the shortbread before caramel.
